Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملGiant Outbursts in Be/x-ray Binaries
Be/X-ray binary systems exhibit both periodic (Type I) X-ray outbursts and giant (Type II) outbursts, whose origin has remained elusive. We suggest that Type II X-ray outbursts occur when a highly misaligned decretion disk around the Be star becomes eccentric, allowing the compact object companion to capture a large amount of material at periastron. Using 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simu...
متن کاملBe/X-ray binaries: An observational approach
Be/X-ray binaries are the most numerous class of X-ray binaries. They constitute an excellent tracer of star formation and can be used to study several aspects of astrophysics, from mass loss in massive stars to binary evolution. This short review, intended for the non-specialist, presents a summary of their basic observational properties and outlines the physical mechanisms giving rise to thes...
متن کاملNoisy Jets and Emission Components in Galactic X-Ray Binaries
Our knowledge of the phenomenology of accretion onto black holes has increased considerably thanks to ten years of observations with the RXTE satellite. However, only recently it has been possible to derive a scheme for the outburst evolution of transient systems on the basis of their spectral and timing properties, reaching a comprehensive definition of source states. These states are in turn ...
متن کاملOrbital period–Hα correlation in Be star/X-ray binaries?
Reig, Fabregat & Coe (1997) plotted the equivalent width of Hα emission against the orbital period for several Be star/X-ray binary systems, and find a correlation. If instead of the equivalent width, which is a relative quantity, the luminosity of Hα emission, which is an absolute quantity, is used the correlation is not found.
